Original description: [Salujha et al., 1969]:

Hystrichosphaeridium grandis sp. nov.

Holotype - Pl. 4, fig. 59.

Diagnosis - Spherical, body +- 50.8 u, distinctly granulose. Processes 7-20 u long, hollow with open ends and slightly broade [sic] bases, usually furcating at the tips.
Description - Golden yellow, originally spherical. Body wall distinct, +- 1.5 u thick, distinctly granulate, grana +- 1.5 u in diameter. Processes 7-20 u long, hollow, stiff with open ends and sparsely studded over the body. Processes with slightly broader bases, stems uniformly wide and ending in shallow funnels which are usually dissected.

Comparison - The present species differs from Hystrichosphaeridium heteracenthum Defl. & Cook., in having a thinner body exine and the usually furcating tips.
