Apectodinium pastielsii
Apectodinium pastielsii, Lentin and Williams, 1989, p. 30
nom. subst. pro Hystrichosphaeridium geometricum Pastiels, 1948, non Hystrichosphaeridium geometricum Deflandre, 1945
Nomenclatural jr. synonym of Baltisphaeridium (now Apectodinium) geometricum Pastiels, 1948 ex Downie and Sarjeant, 1965, which has the same holotype. According to Lentin and Williams, 1989: "When Deflandre and Cookson (1955) created the species Wetzeliella homomorpha they placed Hystrichosphaeridium geometricum Pastiels in the synonym and referred to "Pastiels, 1945 pars." but did not expressly include the holotype (Pastiels, 1948, pl.4 fig.4). By selecting a holotype for Wetzeliella homomorpha from their own material they created a new species, not a new name, as was assumed in previous issues of this index. Thus the holotype of Hystrichosphaeridium geometricum Pastiels has been without a legitimate name since 1948."
Hystrichosphaeridium geometricum Pastiels, 1948 is an illegitimate jr. homonym of Hystrichosphaeridium geometricum Deflandre, 1945a. By "transferring" Pastiels" species to Baltisphaeridium, Downie and Sarjeant, 1965, created the valid and legitimate name Baltisphaeridium geometricum Pastiels, 1948 ex Downie and Sarjeant, 1965. The name Apectodinium pastielsii Lentin and Williams, 1989 is thus superfluous.
Harland, 1979c, considered Hystrichosphaeridium (now Apectodinium) geometricum to be a synonym of Wetzeliella homomorpha var. quinquelata Williams and Downie, 1966b (now Apectodinium quinquelatum) - however, Lentin and Williams, 1989, retained these two taxa separately. If Harland"s synonymy were to be followed, Apectodinium geometricum (Pastiels, 1948 ex Downie and Sarjeant, 1965) Fensome et al., 1990, would be the correct name since it is senior to Apectodinium quinquelatum (Williams and Downie, 1966b) Costa and Downie,
1979.
