Meiourogonyaulax superornata
Meiourogonyaulax superornata (Wetzel, 1967a, p.869–870, pl.16, figs.8a–b) Sarjeant, 1969, p.15. Emendation: Sarjeant, 1980b, p.124–125, as Meiourogonyaulax superornata.
Originally Gonyaulax (Appendix B), subsequently (and now) Meiourogonyaulax, thirdly Gonyaulacysta?, fourthly Lithodinia, fifthly Lithodinia?. This species is here retained in Meiourogonyaulax following the retention of the genus by Riding and Helby (2001d, p.81,83).
Fenton, 1981, transferred this species to Lithodinia Eisenack, 1935. Lentin and Williams, 1981, retained the species in Meiourogonyaulax. Sarjeant, 1982, agreed with Lentin and Williams, 1981, but Dodekova, 1990, retained it in Lithodinia.
Holotype: W. Wetzel, 1967, pl.16, figs.8a-b; Sarjeant, 1980, pl.1, figs.2-3 text-fig.4
Age: Late Bathonian
Original description: Wetzel, 1967, p. 869-870
Diagnosis: A species of the genus Gonyaulax with very low epitheca (apex unknown because of shed apical calotte), with 6 trapezoidal pre-equatorial plates, an indented, laevorotatory girdle furrow and a weakly indicated longitudinal furrow with drop-shaped broadening on the hypotheca. The deeply chalice-shaped hypotheca has 6 post-equatorial plates, of which 1""" is very small, and 1 further intercalary and 1 antapical plate. The setting of the plate boundaries with high flanges seems specialised in that the flanges possess fence-like enforcements.
Dimensions: longitudinal diameter 70 µm. Holotype plus 5 incomplete specimens found.
