Original (Wille and Gocht, 1985):
Dinaurelia pyrgos gen. nov., sp. nov. (Tafel I, II, III, 1--5; IV, V, 1; Fig.l--5, 6-B).
Nominal name: Dinaurelia: named after its external resemblance to the scyphozoan Aurelia aurita; pyrgos (Greek): tower.
Generic-specific diagnosis: Several nested oval cystic shells made of organic matter form a horn-shaped cystocone. The cystocone is uniseriate, slightly curved, and increases in diameter distally. Each individual cyst develops an intercalary-apical archaeopyle with an attached, six-pronged operculum (type tAt1a according to Evitt, 1967). The opercula are arranged one above the other in a line on the convex side of the cystocone; this results in a uniform orientation of all cysts. The paratabulation of the cysts is expressed only in the ring of the seven precingulate lobes and the correspondingly serrated outline of the operculum. Cyst walls are predominantly smooth; Opercula and precingular lobes often scabrate to granular.
Comparison: Distinguished from the closely related Rosswangia and all other fibrous fossil dinoflagellates by its cystocone-like organizational form.
Holotype: Specimen 1612/7. Cross-table coordinates: 17.8 x 98.9 (Plate I, 1a-d; Fig. 2).
Locus typicus: Western slope of the Eichberg, 1 km NNE of Achdorf, Topographic Map 1:25,000, Sheet 8117, Blumberg, Baden-Württemberg.
Stratum typicalum: Subfurcate oolite, zone of Strenoceras subfurcatum (according to Dietl, 1981, now zone of S. niortense), Upper Bajocian, Middle Jurassic. Other layers: Zone of Garantiana garantiana, Upper Bajocian, Middle Jurassic.
Dimensions: (a) Holotype: Cystocone length 67 pm, distal cyst: 32 µm diameter, 37 µm length. (b) Other specimens: distal cysts: diameter 21–37 µm (mean 29 µm), length 24–42 µm (mean 31 µm). (62 measurements).
Material: 75 specimens (71 from the subfurcate oolite of Eichberg, 1 from the subfurcate oolite of Plettenberg, 3 from the Garantianenschichten of Glems).
