Mendicodinium quadratum Kumar, 1987

NOW Shanbeipollenites (acritarch). Originally Mendicodinium, subsequently (and now) Shanbeipollenites (acritarch).

Holotype: Kumar, 1987, pl.2, fig.8
Age: Kimmeridgian-Tithonian

Original description (Kumar, 1987)
Holotype: Pl. 2, Fig. 3, slide B-5/a, England Finder location L-42/3.
Occurrence: Rare occurrences in all specimens.
Diagnosis: Proximate, quadrangular cyst with rounded corners. Archaeopyle epicystal. Autophragm psilate and small in size.
Description: These are proximate characteristically quadrangular cysts with rounded corners. One of the polar ends sometimes develop small protrusion. Paratabulation features are lacking. The archaeopyle is epicystal,
both the epicyst and hypocist are always attached. The separation forming the archaeopyle is only on one side of the cyst, the other side is normally attached either completely or partially. The archaeopyle divides the cyst into almost equal halves. Autophragm is psilate. Dimension (Based on 10 specimens): Diameter
of the cyst = 38.0-45.0 μm. -
Remarks: This differs from all other species of Mendicodinium in being significantly small and having archaeopyle opening on only one side of the cyst.
