Original description (Horowitz, 1975)
Holotype: Slide P 431, Zohar 8 Well, depth 2014 m, Upper Triassic, Southern Israel.
Description: Proximate cyst of a dinoflagellate. Ovoid shape, epitract smaller than the hypotract, archaeopyle formed by the loss of the apical plate, broad, distinct. Equatorial cingulum apparent, broad, sulcus barely visible. Tabulation vague, sutures covered with numerous, small spines, about 3 µm long. Membrane thin, granular. Average dimensions: 60 x 40 µm, 10 specimens.

Discussion: This species is distinguished from other species of the genus Microdinium by its numerous, small spines and its almost perfect oval shape. Origin of the name: based on the oval shape of the cyst.
