Microdinium smolensikense (Vozzhennikova, 1967) Lentin and Williams, 1973; Emendation: Lentin and Vozzhennikova, 1990, p.112, as Rhiptocorys smolenskiensis.

Now Rhiptocorys. Originally Ceratocorys, subsequently Microdinium, thirdly (and now) Rhiptocorys.
Tax. jr. synonym of Rhiptocorys (as Phanerodinium) veligera (Deflandre, 1937) Lejeune-Carpentier and Sarjeant, 1983, according to Below, 1987. Lentin and Vozzhennikova, 1990, retained Microdinium (as Rhiptocorys) smolenskiense as a separate species.
Stover and Evitt, 1978, considered this to be a problematical species of Microdinium.

Theca spherical, broadly oval. Epitheca small, slightly convex. Hypotheca large, consisting of regularly or irregularly quadrangular plates. Plates bounded by an undulating or fillet-like crest which is supportet on its inner side by slender struts which in optical section appear columnar, and at the corners where the plates unite, by a complex network. The outer margin of the crest is smooth although sometimes it may bear a few small spines. The surface of the plates is sculptured with tuberculous, vermiform or more complicated patterns of sculpture. The position of the plates is the same as in Ceratocorys veligera.
