Originally Gonyaulax (motile stage), subsequently Gonyaulacysta, thirdly Gonyaulacysta?, fourthly Rhynchodiniopsis?, fifthly (and now) Leptodinium.
Jan du Chêne et al., 1986, considered this species, which is based on a single specimen, to be a problematic species of Leptodinium and recommended that the name be restricted to the holotype.

Age: Kimmeridgian
