Originally Gonyaulax (based on motile stage), subsequently Leptodinium, thirdly (and now) Leptodinium?.
Stover and Evitt, 1978, considered Leptodinium reticulatum to be a problematical species of Leptodinium.
Sarjeant, 1982, considered the species to be a provisionally accepted species of Leptodinium.
Jan du ChĂȘne et al., 1986, also considered this to be a problematic species of Leptodinium and recommended that the name be restricted to the holotype.
