Lingulodinium funginum
Lingulodinium "funginum" (Morgenroth, 1966a, p.17-18, pl.3, figs.7-8) Islam, 1983b, p.341.
Taxonomic senior synonym: Hystrichosphaeridium (as and now Lingulodinium) machaerophorum, according to Kokinos and Anderson (1995, p.162).
Holotype: Morgenroth, 1966a, pl.3, fig.7. Originally Baltisphaeridium (Appendix A), subsequently Lingulodinium.
Paratypes: Morgenroth, 1966
Locus typicus: Fehmarn, Katharinenhof, NW Germany
Stratum typicum: Early Eocene
Translation Morgenroth, 1966: LPP
Original diagnosis: Morgenroth, 1966, p. 17: Baltisphaeridium funginum
A species of the genus Baltiasphaeridium with numerous, very short processes, which are closed distally by thick, solid bulges.
Original description: Morgenroth, 1966, p. 17: Baltisphaeridium funginum
Thinn-walled, smooth to granulate, circular capsule covered by numerous 3-4 Ám long, hollow processes, which are closed distally by rounded, solid and thick bulges. The dimensions of this form are very constant. On one specimen a ellipsoidal opening with zigzag margin was observed, which may be interpreted as pylome.
Dimensions: Capsule diameter 47(45/50) Ám, process length 3-4 Ám.
Emended diagnosis: Islam, 1983, p. 341
Cyst subspherical, proximochorate and biphragmal; periphragm chagrinate or granulate; numerous short, hollow, nontabular processes with closed circular or oval bases and bluntly rounded, bulbous or truncate closed distal tips, frequently distal "bulbs" broader than process stems and mushroomlike; small spines sometimes present between processes; archeopyle precingular type 2P-5P, operculum free.
Remarks: Morgenroth"s (1966) observation on its pylome with zigzag margin as being very similar to that in Baltisphaendium machaerophorum Deflandre and Cookson 1955 is supported by observations in this study and is sufficient reason for the present generic transfer of the species. It differs from other species of Lingulodinium in possessing mushroom-like or distally truncate processes.
