Original description: Eisenack, 1954, p. 66: Hystrichospaeridium inodes subsp. gracilis
Diagnosis: A subspecies of H. inodes Klumpp 1953 with following features: central body round to oval, in general larger than that of the root-species, the appendages are longer, significantly thinner and also of rather equal length.

Gocht, 1969, p.42:
This subspecies is well known and has been described in detail several times. Compared to C. inodes, the shafts of the processes are usually more slender, and frequently furcate into several branches. The solid shafts are usually roundish in cross section. Well preserved shafts appear "homogeneous" and vitreous, revealing the fibrous structure only under oblique illumination. The processes in the ventral region are often reduced to a minimal number of 4. The following data are for C. inodes inodes and C. inodes gracilis together.
Occurrence: Early Eocene- Middle Oligocene.
