Now Operculodinium centrocarpum. Originally Hystrichosphaeridium centrocarpum, subsequently Baltisphaeridium centrocarpum, thirdly Cordosphaeridium centrocarpum, fourthly Cordosphaeridium tiara ssp. centrocarpum, fifthly (and now) Operculodinium centrocarpum, sixthly Cordosphaeridium microtriainum ssp. centrocarpum, seventhly Cleistosphaeridium centrocarpum.
Tax. sr. synonym of Membranilarnacia delicata Kar, 1979, according to Jain, 1980.
Matsuoka, 1985, considered this species to represent the encysted stage of Gonyaulax grindleyi Reinecke, 1967, which species is a tax. jr. synonyrn of Peridinium reticulatum Claparede and Lachmann, 1859, according to Dodge, 1989.
Lentin and Williams, 1973, retained Operculodinium centrocarpum (Deflandre and Cookson, 1955) Wall, 1967 as the type of the genus Operculodinium Wall, 1967.
