Deflandrea pachycera
From Fensome et al., 2019:
Deflandrea? pachycera Deflandre and Cookson, 1955, p.252, pl.4, fig.7. Holotype: Deflandre and Cookson, 1955, pl.4, fig.7. Originally Deflandrea, subsequently (and now) Deflandrea?. Questionable assignment: Stover and Evitt (1978,
p.101). The derivation of the epithet pachyceros was not stated in the protologue. Since Principle V of the ICN
states that taxon names are to be treated as Latin and since compound epithets are conventionally treated as
adjectives, the epithet should be rendered as "pachycera", in agreement with the feminine gender of the generic
name (the neuter would be "pachycerum" and the masculine "pachycerus"). Age: Late Paleocene to Early Eocene.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Original diagnosis: Cookson and Eisenack 1955, p. 252: Deflandrea pachyceros
Cell encysted, polygonal with a shallow transverse girdle, epitheca and hypotheca about equal. Epitheca widely conical, terminated by a slightly truncate apex; hypotheca provided with 2 strong, somewhat divergent, conical horns with a straight or slichtly concave sides and blunt apices.
Cyst ellipsoidal, tending in the type (Plate 4, fig. 7) to protrude towards the apex. Membrane of theca entirely covered with small spines or warts.
Dimensions: Length 89 µ, breadth (56) 64 µ.
The lateral position in which the holotype is lying reduces the breadth (56 µm).
