Taeniophora filamentosa
Taeniophora filamentosa (Klement, 1960, p.70, pl.10, figs.5–6) Sarjeant and Gocht in Sarjeant, 1984a, p.169. Emendation: Sarjeant and Gocht in Sarjeant, 1984a, p.169–170, as Taeniophora filamentosa.
Originally Taeniophora iunctispina ssp. filamentosa, subsequently Systematophora iunctispina ssp. filamentosa, thirdly (and now) Taeniophora filamentosa. At the time of the emendation, Sarjeant and Gocht in Sarjeant, 1984 raised this taxon to the species level.
Holotype: Klement, 1960, pl.10, fig.5; Sarjeant, 1984a, pl.2, figs.3–4; Stancliffe and Sarjeant, 1990, pl.3, figs.4,6; Fauconnier and Masure, 2004, pl.78, figs.1–2.
Locus typicus: Scherstetten 1 borehole, SW Germany
Stratum typicum: Middle Oxfordian, Malm Upper Alpha
Translation Klement, 1960: LPP
Original diagnosis: Klement, 1960, p.70: Taeniphora iunctispina ssp. filamentosa
A subspecies of Taeniophora iunctispina characterized by greater slenderness of the processes. Processes shorter than 25 µm.
Emended diagnosis: Sarjeant, 1984, p.170
Cyst broadly ovoidal, proximate, modified phragmochorate. The length of the processes is around 40-45 % of the cyst breadth. Processes very slender to slender, distally capitate, bifurcate, trifurcate or foliate, their branches varying in length and sometimes connected by trabeculae to adjacent processes. At least five elongate, somewhat square structures are demarcated by surficial lines or ridges; these give rise, in gonal situations, to the processes. The cingulum, marked also by lines or low ridges, traverses these linear complexes roughly at mid-point. A sixth, polygonal structure (a peniplate) occupies the antapex. Archaeopyle apical, with well-marked sulcal notch and accessory sutures.
Dimensions: Holotype; maximum overall cross-measurement c. 85 µm, length of cyst 59 µm, breadth 58 µm, length of processes 15-17 µm. Range of dimensions: maximum overall cross-measurement 85-86 µm, length of cyst 52-58 µm, breadth around 52 µm in all specimen measured, length of processes 15-23 µm.
Description: Sarjeant, 1984, p.170
The surface of the phragma is finely to coarsely punctate, the punctae sometimes being quite large. The linear structures appear to have formed as arches about the polar and lateral margins of peniplates on either side of the cingulum, cingular processes being incorporated into their margins at almost equatorial position. The margins of the cingulum, though clearly discernible still, are less prominent than the ridges bounding these complexes. The processes are flexuous and only finely granular, if at all; trabeculae connecting their tips are not numerous.
