Galea mespilana
Galea mespilana Maier, 1959
Originally Galea (generic name illegitimate), subsequently Baltisphaeridium (acritarch), thirdly Chiropteridium, fourthly Hystrichosphaeridium.
Taxonomic senior synonym: Galea (as Chiropteridium) galea, according to Sarjeant (1983, p.108–109).
Following I.C.N. Article 55.1, the species name Galea mespilana is validly published even though the generic name Galea is illegitimate
Holotype: Maier, 1959, pl.29, fig.5
Paratypes: Maier, 1959
Locus typicus: Innien, NW Germany
Stratum typicum: Middle Oligocene-Middle Miocene
Translation Maier, 1959: LPP
Original diagnosis: Maier, 1959, p. 307
A species of the genus Galea characterised by an equatorial archaeopyle, which is not indicated by specific appendages. On the apical side of the cyst a cluster of processes is present.
Original description: Maier, 1959, p. 307
The shell membrane is granulate. The archaeopyle is large and not indicated by specific appendages. Processes, large at the base, are distributed irregularly on the cyst. The processes narrow distally and may end bifurcated or blunt. Often the processes are interconnected by ridges. Typical for this species is the apical cluster of processes.
Dimensions: Diameter central body: 62 Ám; height central body: 48 Ám; length processes: 20 Ám; archaeopyle: 52 Ám.
