Gardodinium pyriforme

Gardodinium pyriforme Vozzhennikova, 1967, p.179

Originally (and now) Gardodinium, subsequently Chlamydophorella.
Davey, 1978, transferred this species to Chlamydophorella Cookson and Eisenack, 1958. Lentin and Williams, 1989, retained it in Gardodinium.
Taxonomic senior synonym: Scriniodinium (as and now Gardodinium) trabeculosum, according to Harding (1996, p.359).

Holotype: Vozzhennikova, 1967, pl.100, fig.4; Lentin and Vozzhennikova, 1990, text-fig.57 (lost, according to Lentin and Vozzhennikova, 1990).
Neotype: Lentin and Vozzhennikova, 1990, pl.12, figs.8-10 (designated by Lentin and Vozzhennikova, 1990).
Locus typicus: Tambovsk region, Russia
Stratum typicum: Barremian
Translation Vozzhennikova, 1967: Lentin and Vozzhennikova, 1990

Original description: Vozzhennikova, 1967, p.179
Theca pyriform with tubular apical process open at the distal end. Transverse furrow divides the theca into unequal parts - a short hypotheca and a long epitheca. Tabulation clearly discernible although it is not possible to determine the number of plates. Internal body has the same shape as the theca and possess a small apical process which extends into the tubular apical horn. Surface of internal body covered with slender processes which bifurcate at the ends and appears to give an inner wall to the theca. Theca slender, delicate, transparent.

Expanded description: Lentin and Vozzhennikova, 1990, p.102
Cyst shape subspherical with an elongate apical horn; holocavate; autophragm with short apical horn extending into the longer apical horn formed by ectophragm; autophragam with numerous split, very thin, echinate spines supporting a delicate ectophragm; ectophragm thin and smooth. Paratabulation incompletely indicated by distinct to indistinct ridges on the ectophragm; gonyaulacoid Archeopyle formed by the loss of the apical series of paraplates, operculun often remaining in place. Paracingulum indicated by two parallel ridges on the ectophragm; parasulcus indistinct.
Size: Holotype, length 76 Ám, width 54 Ám, width of paracingulum about 5 Ám; endocyst, length 60 Ám, width 46 Ám; length of spines 6-8 Ám; Lectotype(?) length 74 Ám, width 52 Ám; Range, length 67-76 Ám, width 51-67 Ám width of paracingulum 5-6 Ám; endocyst, length 52-62 Ám, width 46-62 Ám.
