Operculodinium brevibaculatum

Operculodinium brevibaculatum He Chengquan, 1991

Holotype: He Chengquan, 1991, pl.20, fig.2
Age: Paleocene-Early Eocene

Description from He Chengquan, 1991, translated by Suning Hou, 07-01-2019
Description: The body is nearly circular. Wall thin, surface with particles and many non-septa-shaped processes; There are 35-40 processes around the body, the size and shape are same, short rod-shaped, straight or curved, process width uniform, the ends simple or a few slightly expaned-bifurcated. Archeopyle precingular, P-type, formed by the loss of the third precingular plate, the outline of pentagonal or horseshoe-shaped. Operculum free.
The body diameter 45-50μm, the process length 4-6.5μm (measured 3), Holotype body diameter 50μm, process up to 4μm.
Comparison: The new species is quite similar to the Cleistosphaeridium baculatum in shape and structure of the process, but the former has an obvious pentagonal or nearly horseshoe-shaped archeopyle, precingular, while the latter’s is apical. It is similar to the following species in morphology But the differeces are: Germany Danian stage Operculodinium hirsutum subsp. amplum ‘s processes are 15μm long, no archeopyle shown in the illustration; Argentina Eocene O. bergmannii’s wall is thick, process is long, ends pointed or button shaped; Caribbean sea Quaternary O. giganteum’s individual is large, process dense, base wide, end head like.
Location and stratigraphy: Wuqia County Basebulak; Qimugen fm.
