Palaeocystodinium striatogranulosum Zevenboom and Santarelli in Zevenboom, 1995. Diagnosis from Zevenboom and Santarelli in Zevenboom (1995, p.160-161). A species of Palaeocystodinium with an elongate subspherical central body and long apical and antapical periphragmal horns. The periphragmal horns are striate and granulate. The endophragm is smooth. Size: pericyst length 125-170 µm, width 20-32 µm, endocyst length 30-45 µm, width 20-30 µm.

Palaeocysodinium striatogranulosum Zevenboom and Santarelli sp.nov. (manuscript name) (Plate IX, 12-13).

Etymology: In references to the striae and granulate nature of the apical and antapical horns, on suggestion of Dr. A.J. Powell
Type locality: Giammoia section Sicily, Italy
Type stratum: Upper Miocene
Diagnosis: A species of Palaeocystodinium with an elongate subspherical central body and long apical and antapical periphragmal horns. The periphragmal horns are striae and granulate. The endophargm is smooth
Dimensions: Height pericyst: 125 (145) 170 µm; Width pericyst: 20 (30) 32 µm; Height of endocyst: 30 (40) 45 µm; Width of endocyst 20 (25) 30 µm. N = 25
Description: A large species of Palaeocystodinium with distinct granules and striae on the apical and antapical periphragmal horns. The striae constant of thickenings of the periphragm. The endo- and pericystal archeopyle are formed by the loss of one intercalary paraplate. The endocyst is smooth. No other parasutural features are present
Discussion: Palaeocystodinium striatoranulosum differs from all other Palaeocystodinium spp. In having striae and granules on the apical and antapical horns. It differs from Palaeocystodinium ventricosum Zevenboom and Santarelli sp. nov. in being larger and lacking the round subspherical inner body.
Occurrences: Italy (Powell, 1986b and this study)
Total stratigraphic range: early Miocene through Middle Miocene (this study), see Fig. 5.
