Impletosphaeridium transfodum

Impletosphaeridium transfodum Morgenroth, 1966; emend. Islam, 1993

Holotype: Morgenroth 1966a, Pl. 10 Flg. 5
Locus typicus: Katharinenhof Fehmarn
Stratum typicum: Lower Eocene (?2).
Age: Early Eocene

Translation Morgenroth 1966a: GSC

Original diagnosis: Morgenroth 1966a, p. ?35: Impletosphaeridium transfodum
The thin-walled ellipsoidal capsule is smooth or weakly granular. It is uniformly covered with numerous solid processes which are often perforated by tiny holes. The processes taper gradually and often split into two or three branches. The distal endings show variations. One can find cup-like forms - some with indicated tiny openings and some with simple points.
Remarks: Three of the present specimens show a round, clearly elipsoidal pylome (diameter 25 microns). The process length differs very slightly in the specimens.

Measurements: Capsule length: 41 (36/40 microns), capsule breadth: 32 microns (31/36 microns), process length: l1 microns (11/14 microns), pylome diameter approximately 25 microns (20/28 microns (10 measurements). Number of specimens examined: 10.

Spherical to subspherical and ellipsoidal, skolochorate dinoflagellate cysts, mono or biphragmal, phragma weakly granulate or psilate, possessing numerous nontabular solid processes that are slender, round in cross-section or platy, basally slightly broader, distally simple, acuminate, or variously expanded such as in calyxes or spatula, or branched or otherwise ramified, but are largely similar on individual specimens; archeopyle apical, type tA or (tA), operculum free or adnate; other tabular features absent but groups of processes, or their alignment may indicate a partial tabulation including cingulum and sulcus.
