Hystrichosphaeridium sergipense
From Fensome et al., 2019:
Hystrichosphaeridium? sergipense (Regali et al., 1974, p.291, pl.24, fig.1) Lentin and Williams, 1981, p.147. Holotype: Regali et al., 1974, pl.24, fig.1. Originally Hystrichosphaera, subsequently (and now) Hystrichosphaeridium?. Questionable assignment: Lentin and Williams (1981, p.147); and Masure and Foucher in Fauconnier and Masure (2004, p.313) as a problematic species. Age: Early Eocene.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Original description: [Regali et al., 1974] (translated from Portugese):
Hystrichosphaera sergipensis sp. n. -- Est. XXIV, n.°1.
Derivation: Species name derived from the state of Sergipe, Brazil, where it was first found.
Diagnosis: Spherical central capsule, densely covered with small projections, smooth radial processes with fringed ends.
Holotype: Type slide no. 77. — Est. XXIV, no. 1.
Diameter: 100μ, including spines.
Type locality: Well 1-SES-3 (Sergipe Submarine) 1605-1620 m.
Description: Spherical central capsule, 50 to 60μ in diameter, densely covered with pits. Processes arranged radially, smooth, with fringed ends, 20μ high by 3 to 54μ wide. Each process sits on a pentagonal figure of the capsule, sometimes quite distinct. Diameter ranging from 90 to 100µ, including the processes.
Comparison: Differs from Hystrichosphaera jurcata Wetzel by the presence of pits on the central capsule and the absence of branches at the ends of the processes.
Distribution: Hystrichosphaera sergipensis Zone.
Age: Early Eocene.
Occurrence: Continental shelf of Amapá, Pará, Sergipe, Bahia, and Rio de Janeiro, and the Sergipe/Alagoas Basin.
