Originally Geodia? irregularis, subsequently Hystrichosphaeridium speciale. See also Hystrichosphaeridium irregulare (combination illegitimate).
Tax. jr. synonym of Xanthidium tubiferum var. complex (now Oligosphaeridium complex) White, 1842, according to Harker and Sarjeant in Harker et al., 1990.
