Pierceites chiemgoviensis
Pierceites? chiemgoviensis Kirsch, 1991
Kirsch, 1991 questionably included this species in Pierceites.
Holotype: Kirsch, 1991, pl.18, fig.11; text-fig.55
Age: Early Maastrichtian
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Original description: [Kirsch, 1991]:
Pierceites? chiemngoviensis sp. nov.
Plate 18, Figs. 11-13; Fig. 55
Derivation: From the Chiemgau region, Upper Bavaria.
Holotype: Specimen 371.2, EF: R 54/3.
Paratype: Specimen 201.1, EF: D 33/4.
Locus typicus: Bad Adelholzen, Upper Bavaria.
Stratum typicalum: Patte nauer Schicht; Lower Maastricht.
Diagnosis: Rounded pentagonal, peridinioid cyst without an apical horn, with two poorly developed antapic processes and an intercalary archaeopyle (type 31). A pericoel is not developed.
Description: The habitus of the proximal cyst is strongly rounded, without forming an apical horn. Two strongly reduced prominences are present antapically, barely differing in length. The epicyst exhibits weakly to distinctly convex flanks and an almost spheroidal apical region, while the somewhat shorter hypocyst has straight sides in a dorsoventral position.
The surface ornamentation of the cyst varies from weakly granulated to the formation of coarse granae. However, the two-layered wall structure is rarely observed, as the two layers appear to be pressed together and no pericoel is developed. Archaeopyle
intercalary (type 31), with mostly isolated opercula.
Comparison: This species differs from other species of the genus Pierceites in its overall habitus and the lack of an apical horn. Compared to Pierceites schizocystis HABIB & DRUGG 1987, it is also significantly smaller.
Dimensions: Holotype: Cyst size (L x W) 52 x 50 μm.
Variation: Cyst length 48-56 μm; cyst width 48-50 μm.
Material: 20 specimens.
Occurrence: Moos-Graben profile (BMS); Wehr profile, Bad Adelholzen profile (Pattenau beds).
Age: Lower Maastrichtian (Falsostuarti zone).
This species occurs across facies in the Helvetic and northern Ultrahelvetic regions.
