Original description: [Biffi and Manum, 1988, p. 202, 204]:

Diagnosis:
Cyst proximate, subspherical, with an autophragm ornamented with low ridges which connect to form a well defined reticulum; the archeopyle margins are bordered by a strip devoid of ornamentation.
Archeopyle precingular type 2P (3"-4"), operculum free.

Description:
The cysts are proximate, subsphaerical in shape usually slightly oblate due to polar compression. The autophragm is covered by low ridges which connect to form a well defined reticulum, with subpolygonal meshes; the large archeopyle 2P is bordered by a characteristic strip without ornamentation, which underlines the shape of paraplates 3" and 4" . Operculum is free.
The paratabulation is indistinct, except the archeopyle.

Dimensions:
Holotype: cyst length 70 µm; cyst breadth 70 µm.
Mean values (bracketed) and extremes (n = 12): cyst length 60(70)80 µm; cyst breadth 60(72)80 µm.

Remarks:
Cerebrocysta mediterranea n. sp. differs from Pyxidinopsis challengerensis Habib in having a 2P (3"-4") rather than P (3" only) archeopyle, bordered by a bare strip.
