Nannoceratopsis plegas var. plegas

Nannoceratopsis plegas var. plegas emend. Prauss, 1989

Name illegitimate. Jr. homonym of Nannoceratopsis plegas Drugg, 1978.
By providing an emended diagnosis for Nannoceratopsis plegas var. plegas and excluding the original type of the species Nannoceratopsis plegas, Prauss, 1989, in effect created a junior homonym of Nannoceratopsis plegas.

Holotype: Prauss, 1989, pl.7, fig.1, text-fig.3[f]
Age: Late Toarcian-middle Bajocian

Original description: Drugg, 1978, p. 71
Diagnosis: Cyst outline more or less sickle-shaped. The dorsal horn is elongate and the ventral horn is comparatively short. The antapical cavity is broad and flattened to arcuate. The periphragm usually extends beyond the endophragm at the tips of the antapical horns to form short sack-like extensions. The wall is finely pitted or areolate but this appearance may represent a preservational feature. Low inconspicuous ridges border the lateral edges. The total cyst length ranges from 73 to 109 Ám. Measurements based on 23 specimens.

Emended description: Prauss, 1989, p.15
A varietas of N. plegas with strongly elongate dorsal and clearl ventral antapical horn. Charateristic is the large difference in length between both horns, which gives this form iots typical appearance.
Dimensions: l: 71,1(88,4)107,7 Ám, w: 48,1(58,5)71,1 Ám, l:w (average) 1,5, horns (average): dorsal 35,2 Ám, ventral 18,5 Ám.

Affinities:
Drugg, 1978, p. 71: The elongated dorsal horn with its consequent effect on the cyst outline distinguishes this species from all other described species of Nannoceratopsis. It is most closely allied to N. gracilis Alberti, 1961, although some variants share characteristics with N. pellucida Deflandre, 1938.

Prauss, 1989, p.15
The essential morphological difference with N. plegas var. brevicornus is the large difference in legth between dorsal and ventral antapical horn. Furthermore, the antapical indentation between the horns is more rounded concave, and often somewhat flatter.
Stratigraphically, this form appears in substantial quantity only from the Lower Aalenian, as opposed to var. brevicornus.
