Cerodinium conspicuum
Cerodinium conspicuum, Marheinecke, 1992
Contrary to the opinion of Lentin and Williams (1993, p.90), Williams et al. (1998, p.102) considered this name to be validly published.
Holotype: Marheinecke, 1986, pl.19, figs.3-6 (as Deflandrea i.w.S.sp.) and Marheinecke, 1992, pl.17, figs.1-3
Locus typicus: Hemmoor, Lower Saxony, Germany
Stratum typicum: Late Maastrichtian
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Original description: [Marheinecke, 1992, p. 81]: (Translation: LPP):
Description:
Cyst habit peridinoidal.
Periblast: Epitheca triangular with strong, rounded, blunted apical horn, which is equal in length or longer than epitheca. Hypotheca nearly rectangular, sides slightly concave. Two antapical horns of +/- equal size. The margin between the parallel antapical horns is typically straight.
Cingulum indicated by two ridges with granulae. Sulcus indicated just on the hypotheca.
Ornamentation: Intraareate and peniareate, consisting of ca. 1 µm granulae. Number of granulae decreasing towards the plate centre. The peniareate granulae are not always clearly indicated.
Endoblast: Habit ovaloidal, wall slightly thicker than periblast. No ornamentation. Cingulum, sulcus and areation are not reflected. Above the cingulum appressed.
Areation: 4", 7"", 3a, ?5c, 5""", 2"""". Finae indicated by weak lines. The areae 1a and 3a are narrow, elongated trapezoidal. 3"" and 5"" small and nearly square. 2" and 4" are large, nearly reaching the lower archaeopyle margin.
Periarchaeopyle: Intercalary, 2a. Very large, nearly triangular because of the reduction of the finae between 3", 3"" and 5"". Operculum secate. Endoarchaeopyle: Intercalary, 1a+2a+3a. Operculum secate.
