Hystrichodinium pulchrum ssp. areatum Marheinecke, 1992, p.44, pl.6, figs.8–11. Holotype: Marheinecke, 1992, pl.6, figs.9–10. Contrary to the opinion of Lentin and Williams (1993, p.284), Williams et al. (1998, p.272) considered this name to be validly published. Age: early Maastrichtian.

Original description: Marheinecke, 1992, p. 44
Cyst sphaeroidal to polyedrical. Cross-section of epicyst equal sided triangular, of hypocyst trapezoidal, short side antapical. Wall composed of pedium and luxuria which develops elongated, pointed conical, hollow processes and low ridges. Cingulum and sulcus clearly indicated by low septae. Most of the processes arise from very low peniareate ridges. Intraareate proceses are rare. If developed, area are further divided by additional ridges. Cyst covered by ca. 1 µm wide intrareate pores. The area are seperated by finate, usually pore-free bands. Areation formula: 4', 6'', 6c, 6''', 1p, 1''''. Archaeopyle: precingular, 3''; operculum secate.

Affinities:
Marheinecke, 1992, p. 44: Hystrichodinium pulchrum ssp. areatum differs from other subspecies of H. pulchrum in having a by the distribution of pores clearly marked areation.
