Glaphyrocysta delicata

Glaphyrocysta delicata Wilson, 1988

Holotype: Wilson, 1988, pl.9, figs.6a–b; Fensome et al., 1996, figs.2–3 — p.2101.
Locus typicus: Waipawa Section, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand
Stratum typicum: Waipawan, Early Eocene

Original description: Wilson, 1988, p. 20
Cyst of intermediate size, subspherical, with relatively dense finely reticulate central body and fine, delicate spinose process complexes. Ornamentation apparently penitabular, arising from relatively thick solid annular or arcuate bases. Processes comprise fine discontinuous fibrous septa with irregular spinose crests (height of septa up to 25 Ám) as well as slender penitabular processes (length up to 25 Ám); all interconnected distally by fine trabeculae. Well defined gaps (width c. 5 Ám) occur between process complexes. Paratabulation indistinct, but apparently gonyaulacacean. Archeopyle well defined (Type tA) with a typical zig-zag margin; operculum free and bearing similar ornament to rest of cyst. Paracingulum apparently not defined by process complexes and probably represented by gap between precingular and postcingular processes. Parasulcus usually only indicated at apical end by parasulcal notch.
Dimensions: Holotype: overall diameter 81 Ám, diameter of central body 56 Ám, length of processes 8-22 Ám. Range: overall diameter 66 (76) 88 Ám, diameter of central body 44 (55) 66 Ám (n= 10).

Affinities:
Wilson, 1988, p. 20: Glaphyrocysta delicata is distinguished by its delicate, somewhat membranous, penitabular complexes. Glaphyrocysta undulata (Eaton) Stover & Evitt has some resemblance to G. delicata but has much more reduced ornamentation in the mid dorsal and mid ventral areas. Other species of Glaphyrocysta differ in having a more reduced ornament in the mid ventral and mid dorsal areas.
