Pyxidinopsis waipawaensis
Pyxidinopsis "waipawaensis" Wilson, 1988, p.28, pl.17, figs.4,5a–b. Holotype: Wilson, 1988, pl.17, fig.5a–b; Fensome et al., 1996, figs.2–3 — p.2441. NOW Cerebrocysta. Originally Pyxidinopsis, subsequently (and now) Cerebrocysta. Age: middle to late Eocene.
Locus typicus: Waipawa Section, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand
Original description: Wilson, 1988, p. 28
Cyst subspherical, small to intermediate in size, fairly thick walled (c. 2 µm), apparently comprising autophragm only, with a characteristically reticulate surface. Reticulation sharply defined by interconnected narrow muri (height c. 1-2 µm) defining polygonal smooth lumina of variable size (average breadth range 0.5 µm to 4 µm), but size of lumina rarely exceeding 5 µm. Occasional short non-interconnecting ridges project from muri. No other surface ornamentation present. Archeopyle relatively large, precingular, type P (3"" only), somewhat rounded pentagonal, to almost quadrangular, typically bordered by low, narrow, ridge; operculum free. Paratabulation indicated by archeopyle only. No trace of paracingulum or parasulcus. Dimensions: Holotype: length 46 µm, breadth 46 µm.
Range: overall diameter 44(50)54 µm (n= 10).
Affinities:
Wilson, 1988, p. 28: Pyxidinopsis waipawaensis is distinguished from the type species, P. challengerensis, in possessing a substantially complete polygonal reticulation in which the lumina are of variable size, though rarely exceeding 5 µm in maximum breadth. The reticulum of the type species is incomplete.
