Rhiptocorys smolenskiensis
Rhiptocorys smolenskiensis (Vozzhennikova, 1967) emend. Lentin and Vozzhennikova, 1990
Originally Ceratocorys, subsequently Microdinium, thirdly (and now) Rhiptocorys. Tax. jr. synonym of Micrhystridium (now Rhiptocorys) veligera Deflandres 1937, according to Below, 1987; however, Lentin and Vozzhennikova, 1990 retained Rhiptocorys smolenskiensis as a separate species.
Holotype: Vozzhennikova, 1967, pl.36, fig.4 (lost according to Lentin and Vozzhennikova, 1990)
Lectotype: Lentin and Vozzhennikova, 1990, pl.13, figs.1-3, text-fig.65; designated by Lentin and Vozzhennikova, 1990
Locus typicus: Smolensk region, Russia
Stratum typicum: Late Cretaceous
Translation Vozzhennikova, 1967: Lentin and Vozzhennikova, 1990
Original descrption: Vozzhennikova, 1967, p.93: Ceratocorys smolensikensis
Theca spherical, broadly oval. Epitheca small, slightly convex. Hypotheca large, consisting of regularly or irregularly quadrangular plates. Plates bounded by an undulating or fillet-like crest which is supported on its inner side by slender struts which in optical section appear columnar, and at the corners where the plates unite, by a complex network. The outer margin of the crest is smooth although sometimes it may bear a few small spines. The surface of the plates is sculptured with tuberculous, vermiform or more complicated patterns of sculpture. The position of the plates is the same as in Ceratocorys veligera.
Emended description: Lentin and Vozzhennikova, 1990, p.112
Cyst shape roundly oval; proximochorate; with round undulating suturocavate crests, which are dominantly on the hypocyst, epicyst less than 1/2 the length of the hypocyst; large suturocavate parasutural crests are wide and ballooning to an undulate margin; periphragm ornamented with intratabular clusters of bacculae which occasionally join to form verrucae; paratabulation outlined by large suturocavate crest on the hypocyst and the anterior margin of the paracingulum and by delicate crests on the epicyst; paratabulation formula: 4", 6"", 6c, 6""", 1p, 1"""". The wide parasulcus is ornamented with random baculae without any indication of paratabulation; archeopyle formula tA + 5-6P@, the archeopyle is apical with accessory sutures between all precingular paraplates; operculum attached; paracingulum bounded on both anterior and posterior margins with ballooning suturocavate crests which join to form wider expanses over the paracingular margins; parasulcus tear-drop shape bounded by ballooning suturocavate crests, without indication of paratabulation.
