A species of Pentadinium, suturocavate to almost holocavate with scabrate to slightly granulate endophragm, almost smooth periphragm and with typical spinose parasutural periphragmal folds.
The parasutural folds are variably expressed and bear gonal and probably intergonal short, acuminate spines. The folds are slightly indented between the spines, suggesting a relationship to of Spiniferites-type cysts with strongly reduced processes.
The paratabulation seems to coincide typically with the often incompletely reflected basic gonyaulacacean pattern Pentadinium. The archaeopyle is of type P, 3" only, operculum free.

This relatively small and delicate Pentadinium-species shows typically indented spiny crests; the spines rarely occurring in pairs or even in threes, thus strongly suggesting a resemblance to some antapical Spiniferites-membranes or to the ventro-antapical periphragm of Hystrichostrongylon.
The parasutural folds are variably expressed; they may be high and distinct or merged in the adjoining folds to a continuous cavation and accordingly difficult to discern. On the ventral surface of some specimens the parasutural folds are even lacking. Some isolated Spiniferites-like processes rarely occur.
The central body is subspherical and thin-walled, and its surface is scabrate to faintly granulate. The delicate periphragm is smooth to chagrinate.

Affinities:
Strauss and Lund, 1992, p.169: This species differs from all previously recorded Pentadiniumspecies by the nature of its spiny crests. It is most similar to Edwards" species P. goniferum and P. polypodum, but the latter differ from the new species in the distinct expression of partly furcate gonal processes.
Pentadinium spinulum probably represents a morphologically transitional link etween the genera Pentadinium and Spiniferites s. l.
