Nannoceratopsis plegas ssp. brevicorna
Nannoceratopsis plegas ssp. brevicornutus (Prauss, 1989) Lentin and Williams, 1993
Originally Nannoceratopsis plegas var. brevicornus, subsequently (and now) Nannoceratopsis plegas ssp. brevicornus.
Holotype: Prauss, 1989, pl.7, fig.13
Age: Late Toarcian-Bajocian
Original description: Prauss, 1989, p.14
A varietas of the species N. plegas with reduced dorsal and clear ventral antapical horn, so that both horns are a bit similar in length. Pedium solid, luxuria spongious, microreticulate to massive. At the distal parts of the horns a small pericoel is often formed due to the detachment of the luxuria. The overall appearance of the form makes a heavy, squat appearance.
Dimensions: l: 80,7(85,2)92,3 Ám, w: 48,1(54,0)57,7 Ám, l/w (average) 1,6; horns (average): dorsal 28,4 Ám, ventral 19,6 Ám.
Remark: In some specimens an inner body was observed. Often, an endoblast imitates the periblast, so that the impression of a "double cyst" is given.
Affinities: Prauss, 1989, p.15
The form bears a superficial resemblance to N. spiculata, by many authors also found in the Upper Pliensbachian. N. plegas var. brevicornus sis in its general appearance clearly more heavy and squat than N. spiculata. The pronounced asymmetry of the antapical horns, described in N. spiculata, is also missing [A closer similarity can be observed between N. spiculata and N. pellucida].
