Polysphaeridium variabile

Polysphaeridium variabile He Chengquan, 1991

Holotype: He Chengquan, 1991, pl.28, fig.15
Age: Paleocene

Description from He Chengquan, 1991, translated by Suning Hou, 07-01-2019
Description: Oval body, wall thickness about 1.5μm; inner wall slightly thicker, smooth surface; outer wall thin, the surface granular. With a large number of non-tabular processes, around the body about 50, the vast majority are narrow tubular, 12-25μm long, distal expansion, the shape of the end variable: some funnel, its mouth edge tiny tuberculate, pr strongly flipping; some with laterally extending short branches, branches bent backwards. The width of the processes on the same specimens varies, generally width at middle 2-5μm. Processes are brittle, easy to break. In addition to the above processes, there are a few fine bar-shaped processes, solid, straight or curved, the end simple or bifurcate, length 8-20μm. Under the ordinary optical microscope, the archeopyle of the specimens can not be determined, but from scanning electron microscope, the body is incomplete, a small half missing, which may be related to the apical archeopyle.
The total diameter 68.2-105μm, the body diameter of 50-72.5 (measured 4); the holotype total length 105μm, width 87μm, the body length of about 72.5 μm, width 57.5μm, tubular processes length 20-25μm, the central width of 2.5-5μm.
Compaison: The new species is similar to the type species of the genus, but the size of the former processes varies, the majority are 5μm wide, the latter’s process size is consistent, 2μm wide, these two are easy to distinguish.
Location and stratigraphy: Wuqiaa County Basebulak; Qimugen fm lower member.
