Baltisphaeridium ehrenbergii
Baltisphaeridium ehrenbergii, (Deflandre, 1947), Sarjeant, 1961
Now Cleistosphaeridium. Originally Hystrichosphaeridium, subsequently Baltisphaeridium, thirdly (and now) Cleistosphaeridium.
Nomenclatural sr. synonym of Cleistosphaeridium deflandrei Courtinat, 1989 since both species have the same holotype. Courtinat, 1989 erected the species Cleistosphaeridium deflandrei and designated as holotype the specimen illustrated in Deflandre, 1938 and Deflandre, 1947. This is the only specimen of Hystrichosphaeridium ehrenbergii illustrated by Deflandre, 1947 when he erected this species. Courtinat ,1989 considered Hystrichosphaeridium ehrenbergii Deflandre, 1947, to be a nomen nudum, since Deflandre, 1947 did not give a diagnosis or designate a holotype. According to the I.C.B.N. (Article 37.1), "Publication on or after 1 January 1958 of the name of a new taxon of the rank of genus or below is valid only when the holotype of the name is indicated ..." Also, according to the I.C.B.N. (Article 32.2), "For the purpose of valid publication of a name, reference to a previously and effectively published description or diagnosis may be direct or indirect ..." Deflandre, 1947 referred to "H. cf. hirsutum (Ehr.) Defl. 1938" a reference to the taxon he described and illustrated under the name "Hystrichosphaeridium cf. hirsutum (Ehr.) Defl" in Deflandre, 1938. This can be considered to meet the requirements of I.C.B.N. Article 32.2. Since Deflandre, 1947 illustrated only one specimen, there can be no question as to which is the holotype. Regardless, he was not required to specify a nomenclatural type at that time. Thus, Hystrichosphaeridium ehrenbergii Deflandre, 1947 must be regarded as a validly published species and Cleistosphaeridium deflandrei Courtinat, 1989, as an illegitimate name, being a nomenclatural jr. synonym of Hystrichosphaeridium ehrenbergii.
Tax. sr. synonym of Cleistosphaeridium deflandrei according to Stancliffe, 1991.
