Name not validly published since the specific name Baltisphaeridium hirsutum is not validly published.
Now Operculodinium centrocarpum ssp. amplum. Originally Hystrichosphaeridium hirsutum ssp. amplum (name not validly published), subsequently Baltisphaeridium hirsutum ssp. amplum (name not validly published), thirdly Operculodinium? hirsutum ssp. amplum, fourthly (and now) Operculodinium centrocarpum ssp. amplum. In proposing this subspecies, W. Wetzel, 1955 misspelled the specific epithet as "hirtum"; see Downie and Sarjeant, 1965.
