Spiniferites monilis

Spiniferites monilis (Davey and Williams, 1966) Sarjeant, 1970; emend. Eaton, 1976

Orginally Hystrichosphaera, subsequently (and now) Spiniferites.
Holotype: Davey and Williams, 1966, pl.5, fig.2; Bujak et al., 1980, pl.4, figs.7-8
Locus typicus: Kent, England
Stratum typicum: Early Eocene

Original diagnosis: Davey and Williams, 1966, p.45: Hystrichosphaera monilis
A species of Hystrichosphaera possessing a spherical central body with slightly granular surface. Processes short, sub-conical to cylindrical, closed, simple or distally forked. Granules concentrated along proximal sutural crests.
Dimensions: holotype: diameter of central body 36 by 38 µm, length of processes up to 11 µm. Range: diameter of central body 31-46 µm, length of processes up to 11 µm.

Original description: Davey and Williams, 1966, p.46: Hystrichosphaera monilis
Distally the processes may be simple, bi-, tri-, or tetrafurcate. When the processes are furcate, the furcations are digitate and always erect. Each taeniate furcation may be bifid or have a serrate or entire distal margin. Some of the processes are fenestrate proximately.

Emended diagnosis: Eaton, 1976, p.282
A species of Spiniferites with a sphaerical or subsphaerical cyst body and a smooth or finely granular surface. Processes short, simple or branched; distally simple or furcate. Furcations taeniate, simple or branched, their distal margin entire, aculate or secate.
