Vozzhennikovia microornata
From Fensome et al., 2019:
Vozzhennikovia microornata Slimani, 1994, p.120–121, pl.14, figs.16–22,38.
Questionable assignment: Sluijs et al. (2009, p.50).
Holotype: Slimani, 1994, pl.14, figs.16–18.
Age: late Campanian–early Maastrichtian
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Original description (Slimani, 1994) Translation: PKB 2024
Vozzhennikovia microornata sp. nov. (PI.14, Fig.16-22,38)
Derivation of name: Greek: micro, small; Latin: adorning, adorned; reference to the microornamented periphragm.
Holotvpe: Turnhout -933 m, préparation 6, coord. E.F. Q45/3.
Paratvpe: Turnhout -933 m, préparation 6, coord. E.F. V55.
Locus typicus: Turnhout -933 m.
Stratum typicum: Campanian
Synonymy:
? 1990a: Vozzhennikovia sp. A - MARSHALL, p. 30-32, pl. 25, fig. N-P, S-V.
Diagnosis: Small Vozzhennikovia cyst, characterized by its surface uniformly and densely covered by fine, short projections that are usually capitate.
Dimensions:
Holotype: pericyst, length: 42 µm, width: 34 µm; endocyst, length 30 µm, width: 30 µm.
Variations: pericyst, length: 34 - 50 µm, width: 28 - 34 µm; endocyst, length: 28 - 36 µm, width: 25 - 36 µm. Apical horn length: 6 - 8 µm. Antapical horn length: 2 - 4 µm. Height of projections: 0.5 - 1 µm. Number of specimens measured: 18.
Material: > 30 copies.
Description: Proximate cyst, cornucavate to rarely circumcavate and lenticular in shape. It has a subtriangular apical horn and a single smaller, more pointed antapical horn that apparently has an axial position. The periphragm is densely and uniformly decorated with fine, short projections at the slightly capitate distal ends which give it a microgranular appearance in superior view. The density and distribution of these projections are generally constant while their height is slightly variable intraspecifically. The endophragm is very thin, smooth and often wrinkled. The intercalary archaeopyle of this type is stenodeltaform. The operculum is often adnate on the posterior edge of the archaeopyle. Except for the archaeopyle, the cyst is not provided with other signs of paratabulation.
Comparison: Vozzhennikovia microornata sp. nov. is probably equivalent to Vozzhennikovia sp. A by MARSHALL (1990a) (see synonymy above). It differs from V. spinulosa WILSON (1984c) by its lenticular shape, its smaller size, and its shorter and denser ornaments.
Stratigraphic distribution: Turnhout: -940 to -850.72 m, upper Campanian. - Maastrichtian inf. MARSHAL L (1990a), early lower Campanian. - late Campanian, (lsabelidinium korojenence Zone - Satyrodinium haumuriense Zone), S. Australia.
