Microdinium sonciniae
From Fensome et al., 2019:
Microdinium sonciniae (Marheinecke, 1992, p.110–111, pl.25, figs.1–4) Slimani, 1994, p.41. Holotype: Marheinecke, 1992, pl.25, figs.1–2. Originally Phanerodinium?, subsequently (and now) Microdinium. Taxonomic junior synonym: Microdinium perplexum (name not validly published), according to Slimani (2001a, p.193). Age: late early–late late Maastrichtian.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Original description: [Marheinecke, 1992] (translated from German):
Derivatio nominis: After the palynologist MARIE-JO SONCINI.
Holotype: The specimen shown on Plate 25, Figs. 1-2 from K868.2 at 14.7/162.5; MARHEINECKE Collection. Locus typicus: Former Hemmoor chalk pit (Lower Saxony).
Stratum typicum: Upper Lower Maastrichtian (sumensis zone), chalk.
Description: Cyst habitus proximate, acavate, ovaloidal. Epicyst somewhat smaller than the hypocyst. Wall consisting of pedium and luxuria. The pedium is thin, without ornamentation. The luxuria forms intraareat, mostly irregularly shaped pieces of "pseudosepts". Septa are formed on the fins, the exact structure of which is not recognizable in the LM.
Archeopyle: apical, uncertain 1'+2'+3'+4'+1a+2a+3a+4a. Operculum secate.
Areation: as far as can be determined, this corresponds to the genus diagnosis.
Additional note: The assignment to the genus Phanerodinium is uncertain, as this form has not been examined in a direct light microscope/SEM comparison. Therefore, the structure of the archeopyle and the formation of the small areas are uncertain. The formation of area 1" also possibly points to Cladopyxidium.
Comparison: This form is distinguished in the light microscope findings by the typical intraareate ornamentation.
Specimens: >160.
Holotype statistics: Length: 33, width: 30, height of ridges: 2.5.
Statistics: Length: 24(32)34, width: 24(30)33, height of ridges: 2-3.
Measured specimens: 14.
Known range: Maastrichtian Paleocene.
