Spiniferites cornutus var. normalis
Spiniferites cornutus var. normalis Cookson and Eisenack. 1974
Originally Spiniferites cornutus var. normalis, subsequently Spiniferites cornutus ssp. normalis.
Taxonomic senior synonym (at subspecific rank): Hystrichosphaera cornuta var. laevimura (as Spiniferites cornutus subsp. laevimurus, now Spiniferella cornuta subsp. laevimura), according to Below (1982c, p.33).
Holotype: Cookson and Eisenack. 1974, p.23, fig.5
Age: Paleocene
Original diagnosis: Cookson and Eisenack, 1974, p.62
Shell oval, thin-walled, smooth, with distinctly developed lists. Processes relatively short, thin, almost filamentous, slightly thicker solely on the antapex, generally slightly furcated. Apical horn relatively short, fairly broad, hollow, but distinctly set apart, with 2 minute pointed protuberances. Girdle highly helicoidal, longitudinal furrow slanted. Spanning-membranes sporadically fairly broad.
Dimensions: Shell about 65 x 57 µm, overall about 92 x 76 µm horn about 18 µm, spanning-membranes up to 5 µm wide.
Occurrence: Rivernook Bed. - Preparation Riv. No. 4.
Remarks: Cookson and Eisenack, 1974, p.62
The name normalis was chosen since this variant clearly shows the characteristics of a Sp. cornutus, however, without peculiarities. From the Sp. cornutus var. cornutus , with which it has the development of the processes in common, our variant distinguishes itself by the pronounced oval shape and by the shorter horn and possibly also by the sporadically broader lists or spanning membranes.
