Now Rhaetogonyaulax arctica ssp. maculata. Originally Shublikodinium arcticum var. maculatum, subsequently Shublikodinium arcticum ssp. maculatum, thirdly (and now) Rhaetogonyaulax arctica ssp. maculata.

Same as for the genus with the following additional description, The cyst wall of this variety is characteristically covered with medium-relief, coarse grana and verrucae. This ornamentation is rather uniformly scattered over the entire cyst wall. Occasionally, a slight thickening is exhibited also at the plate margins. S. arcticum var. maculatum has a coarser, slightly more verrucate ornamentation than S. arcticum, and a less coarse, less verrucate ornamentation than S. verrucosum.
