Impagidinium solidum

Impagidinium solidum Versteegh and Zevenboom, 1995

Holotype: Versteegh and Zevenboom, 1995, pl. II, figs. 5,6,9
Type Locality: Punta Piccola Section, Sicily, Italy
Type stratum:

Original diagnosis: Versteegh and Zevenboom, 1995, p. 223
Ovoid to elongate Impagidinium cysts with sutural septa and a finely granulate surface. The cyst wall is thick, finely transversely striate to structureless on cross section. The reflected tabulation is basically 4", 6"",6c, 6""", 1p, 1"""". Septa are absent along the sulcal plate sutures themselves and the sulcus/1""" suture. However, occasionally initiations of septa or low septa between sulcus/ps, sulcus/1""" and as/ras are present. Specimens which reduced or absent septa on ther than the sulcal plate sutures occur. No consistent pattern seems to be present in this kind of reduction in reflected tabulation.

Description: Versteegh and Zevenboom, 1995, p. 223
Of this thick walled Impagidinium species, specimens from the Monte Singa section were generally more robust and had higher septa than specimens from the Punta Piccola section. All specimens encountered had a brown-yellow cyst wall. Specimens which septa partly or completely lacking on other sutures than the sulcal ones are frequent in the Punta Piccola section.
Dimensions: Holotype: height: 60 µm; maximum diameter: 52 µm; height of septa 1 µm. Range: height: 51-62 µm; maximum diameter: 44-55 µm; height of septa 1-3 µm; wall thickness 2-4 µm; specimens measured: 12.

Affinities:
Versteegh and Zevenboom, 1995, p. 223
This species differs from Impagidinium bacatum Londeix et al., 1992 in lacking small blastulae in the septa. It differs from all other Impagidinium species by the combination of a thick wall, reflected sulcal tabulation and low septa.

Stratigraphy range: Late Zanclean, top NN12/13 (Zevenboom and Versteegh, in prep.) to Early Piacenzian, NN 16/17 (Zevenboom and Versteegh, in prep.).
