Distatodinium tenerum
Distatodinium tenerum (Benedek, 1972) Eaton, 1976; emend. Benedek and Sarjeant, 1981
Originally Tanyosphaeridium, subsequently (and now) Distatodinium.
Holotype: Benedek, 1972, pl.10, fig.13; Benedek and Sarjeant, 1981, fig.1/5
Paratype: Benedek, 1972, pl.10, fig.14
Locus typicus: Tönisberg, Lower Rhine Region, Germany
Stratum typicum: Middle Oligocene
Translation Benedek, 1972: LPP
Original description: Benedek, 1972, p. 35-36: Tanyosphaeridium tenerum
Diagnosis: A species of the genus Tanyosphaeridium with delicate wall, with a weakly granulate surface and very short processes.
Description: The elongate calsule with thin wall has a weakly granulate, locally also smooth surface. From it, 6 to 12 µm high and fairly equidistant, hollow processess emerge, which, in places, do not follw a strict order and also vary in appearance. The shafts are broad or slender and mostly have a broaddened base, which in some cases is fused with the neighbouring processes. After an initial narrowing, the processes broaden and branch diatally into shirt, pointed thorns. It concerns similar processes as in T. paradoxum.
Through detachment of an apical calotte the pylome is delivered. An isolated polar calotte has never been observed.
Dimensions: capsule length 76 µm (75/85 µm), capsule width 42 µm (38/48 µm), process length 8 µm (5/12 µm). 10 measurements. 19 specimens studied.
Emended diagnosis: Benedek and Sarjeant, 1981, p. 347-348
Cyst elongate ellipsoidal, skolochorate. Phragma thin and weakly granulate or laevigate. Processes short (length in general less than 1/5th of the cyst breadth: antapical process somewhat longer), tubular and buccinate to aculeate, somewhat compressed longitudinally. Linear ridges delimit a broad paracingulum; epitract and hypotract are of about equal size. Paratabulation not otherwise directly indicated, but surficial ridges form a meshwork linking the bases of adjacent processes. Archaeopyle apical (Type tA).
Dimensions: Holotype: length (apex lacking) 77 µm, breadth 42 µm, length of processes 8-12 µm. Range: length (apices lacking) 75-85 µm (mean 76 µm), breadth 38-48 µm (mean 42 µm), length of processes 5-12 µm (mean 8 µm). 19 specimens measured.
