Original description: Stover and Hardenbol, 1994:
Proximate subspherical cysts; outer surface of relatively thick autophragm punctoreticulate to finely granulate and also bears coni. Coni more or less evenly distributed, variable in basal diameter, 2 to 2.5 µm high and spaced from less than 1 µm to about 2 µm apart. Archeopyle precingular, operculum monoplacoid and secate. Other indications of paratabulation absent.

Size: small; 40 to 47µm in diameter.

Comparison/Affinities:
The ornamentation of Xenicodinium conispinum is similar to that on Operculodinium placitum Drugg and Loeblich 1967 but differs in having coni that are higher than the spines on O. placitum, and have variable basal diameters.
