Original description: [Poulsen 1996, p. 79-80]:

Diagnosis:
Spherical cyst, autophragm only, densely covered with short slender spines, which may be divided at the base.
No indication of paratabulation except for archeopyle.
Archeopyle apical, type (tA)a, operculum attached.

Dimensions:
Holotype: length 57 µm, width 55 µm, spines 5 µm.
Overall cyst length (minimum-mean-maximum): 46 µm- 53 µm- 59 µm. Overall cyst width (minimum-mean-maximum): 44 µm- 52 µm- 56 µm; 15 specimen measured.

Affinities:
Barbatacysta pilosa (Ehrenberg 1854) Courtinat 1989 has a free operculum and bifurcating spines (Erkmen and Sarjeant, 1980). Comasphaeridium capillatum Courtinat 1980 is regarded as an acritarch because an archeopyle has not been observed. Also Comasphaeridium capillatum has slightly longer spines, which were originally described as simple. Cometodinium? comatum Srivastava 1984 is a small species (35-42 µm) and has 8-10 µm long simple spines.
Cometodinium habibii Monteil 1991a is most similar to C. jurassicum. The processes of C. habibii Monteil 1991 are also slender spines with a broad divided base, but are longer (15-17 µm), and the overall size of C. habibii Monteil 1991 is slightly larger (50-70 µm). Cometodinium obscurum Deflandre and Courteville 1939 emend. Monteil 1991 and Cometodinium? whitei (Deflandre and Courteville 1939) Stover and Evitt 1978 emend. Monteil 1991 have longer spines than C. jurassicum.
