Melitasphaeridium simpulum

Melitasphaeridium? simpulum Islam, 1983

Islam, 1983, questionably included this species in Melitasphaeridium.
Holotype: Islam, 1983, pl.3, fig.11
Locus typicus: Isle of Sheppey, SE England
Stratum typicum: Early Eocene

Original diagnosis: Islam, 1983, p.241
The cyst is subspherical, skolochorate and biphragmal; the phragma are closely adpressed; the endophragm is microreticulate and the periphragm is psilate to mildly chagrinate; possesses fewer to many slender taeniate hollow or solid processes which are distally asymmetrically patulate with one or two aculei frequently recurved while looking like ladles; frequently the patulation is reduced or absent (by breakage?), closed at both ends when hollow; the intratabular distribution of processes and therefore the paratabulation are frequently indistinct; the archeopyle is precingular type P but frequently unclear.
Dimensions: Holotype: cyst body 28 X 28 Ám, Iength of processes 0-1 Ám. Range: cyst length 36(30)26 Ám, breadth 31(28)12 Ám, length of processes 8-13 Ám. Specimcns measured 10.

Affinities:
Islam, 1983, p.241: The generic allocation of the species is based on general overall morphology, precingular archeopyle and partial lack of paracingular processes, but questioned for frequently possessing too many processes which are distally closed and could be solid, and unclear paratabulation.
