Batiacasphaera kekerengensis
Batiacasphaera kekerengensis, Schiøler and Wilson, 1998, Plate 7, figs. 1-8
Holotype: Schiøler and Wilson 1998 , Sample P30/f639, slide SM 4611 (Plate 7, Fig. 2).
Paratypes: Schiøler and Wilson 1998, Plate 7, Fig. 3, 4, 6
Type locality: Ben More section, south Marlborough, New Zealand.
Type stratum: Paton Formation at 166 m on log P30c6; Piripauan (lower Santonian).
Stratigraphic occurrence: 85.5-179.5 m in the Ben More section, 180-324 m (top of section) in the Kekerengu section. Upper Teratan-lower Haumurian (upper Coniacian-lower Campanian, Upper Cretaceous) in the Paton and Herring formations, south Marlborough, New Zealand.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Original description: [Schiøler and Wilson, 1998]:
Diagnosis:
Subspherical autocyst. Phragm surface finely reticulate. Reticulum with low muri delimiting small uniform round lumina.
Archeopyle apical, type tA, operculum almost symmetrically hexagonal and usually free.
Paratabulation not indicated apart from archeopyle margin.
Description:
Subspherical autocyst with a finely reticulate autophragm. The autophragm is smooth to microgranulate (thickness of autophragm: c 2 µm). The lumina are small (diameter of lumina: 2-4 µm) and of uniform size on a specimen, rounded to subcircular in shape. The muri are low; 0.25 - 0.5 µm; but the width of the muri (i.e. the distance between the lumina) is relatively large; c 1-2 µm.
The paracingulum and the parasulcus are not indicated.
The archeopyle is apical, type tA, the operculum is almost symmetrically hexagonal, simple and free (Plate 7, Fig. 5).
The paratabulation is not indicated apart from the archeopyle margin.
Dimensions (in µm):
Holotype | Range:
Length of autocyst (without operculum) 87 | 48 (75) 98
Width of autocyst 65 | 60 (69) 83
Number of specimens measured: 11
Affinities/Remarks:
Batiacasphaera imperfecta Stover and Helby, 1987 resembles the new species, but differs in being smaller and in having a reticulum with lumina of variable size and shape. B. kekerengensis sp. nov. differs from all other species of Batiacasphaera in having a regular reticulum.
