Original description: [Deflandre, 1937b, p. 55] (translated from French), as Palaeostomocystis:

The generic attribution of the organism cataloged here remains doubtful due to the appearance of the cell opening. This opening, in fact, occupies the entire width of the shell, which exhibits the shape of a short, slightly constricted cylinder, ending in a rounded subaeonic base. About a dozen long, stiff or slightly curved spines are distributed quite irregularly throughout the integument, including the edges of the opening. This integument itself is thin, transparent, and smooth. It is almost colorless or light yellowish, easily stained with aniline dyes. P. echinulata does not appear rare: I have already seen it in several flint pebbles, but its very small size (6/7 μ, without the spines) means that it must have gone unnoticed very often.
