Desmocysta simplex
From Fensome et al., 2019:
Desmocysta simplex Duxbury, 2001, p.105–106, fig.7, nos.1–3. Holotype: Duxbury, 2001, fig.7, no.1. Age: late Hauterivian.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Original description (Duxbury, 2001):
Desmocysta simplex n. sp.
1979 Ophiobolus sp. A DAVEY, 1979, pl. 4, figs. 7, 8.
Holotype: Figure 7.1.
Type Locality: Well 13/24 a-6 at 5820 ft (ditch cuttings), Late Hauterivian. E.F. D27.2.
Derivation of Name: From the Latin simplex, simple, referring to the small number of antapical threads.
Diagnosis: A smooth-walled, spheroidal to ovoidal dinoflagellate cyst species. A large, two paraplate precingular archeopyle is present, and this is the only expression of paratabulation in an otherwise featureless cyst. A small number of long, fine filaments extend from a small area at the antapex, and these vary in length between specimens. These filaments are normally separated from each other, but may be tangled to varying degrees.
Dimensions: Holotype: Cyst 57 x 52 μm
Antapical filaments: 97 μm
Overall: Cyst 66 (61) 57 x 58 (50) 41 μm
Antapical filaments 106 (96) 88 μm
Specimens Measured - 11
Comments: This species is similar to Desmocysta plekta DUXBURY, 1983, in the cyst shape and wall texture. However, Desmocysta simplex DUXBURY n. sp. 1s generally larger, and possesses fewer antapical filaments. The highest occurrence of this species is a valuable top Hauterivian marker in this area, and it can be abundant in the latest Hauterivian.
