Lingulodinium machaerophorum var. truncatum

Lingulodinium machaerophorum var. truncatum Strauss et al., 2001, p.405; pl.6, fig.7.

Originally Lingulodinium truncatum (name not validly published), subsequently (and now) Lingulodinium machaerophorum var. truncatum.

Holotype: Strauss et al., 2001, p.405; pl.6, fig.7.
Age: Late Miocene.

Original description (Strauss et. al, 2001)
Derivation of name: to describe the distally truncated processes
Holotype: sample 61/61.85 m, Pl. 6, figs. 7
Paratype: Middle Miocene (Langenfeldian), Papendorf, slide 14512/2, see Strauss & Lund, 1992, pl. 1, fig. 19
Type locality and horizon: Nieder Ochtenhausen borehole (NW Germany), Late Miocene (Gramian).
Diagnosis: A variety of Lingulodinium machaerophorum with characteristically truncated distal process terminations. Processes may be of variable length and thickness. The archaeopyle is formed by detachment of typically more than one precingular paraplate (2-5 P).
Size: central body diameter 44...53 µm, process length 4...8 µm
Remarks: Based on the range of resting cyst morphology observed during germination and culturing studies of the living marine dinoflagellate Lingulodinium (al. Gonyaulax) polyedrum, Kokinos & Anderson (1995) concluded that specimens with both pointed and truncated spines should be included in one cyst species L. machaerophorum. During the excystment studies, cyst types with truncated processes have been reported to occur when normal growth of processes was interrupted by premature rupture of an outer membrane. Since cyst types with truncated processes are very distinctive as they occur in our material only in samples where L. machaerophorum occurs with maximum frequency, they are formally described as a new variety of Lingulodinium machaeophorum herein.
