Holotype: Sun Xuekun, 1994, pl.3, fig.11.
Age: Eocene.

Original description (Sun Xuekun, 1994):
Protoellisoidinium minutus sp.nov. (Pl. 3, fig. 11)
Deivation of name: Lat., minutus, small – with reference to the small size.
Holotype: Slide X4-4; Plate 3, fig. 11; Paleogene (Eocene), Liaohe, north east China.
Repository: Division of Fossil Algae, Nanjing Institute of Geology and Paleontology, Academia Sinica, Nanjing, China.

Diagnosis: Body small, elongate ellipsoidal. Processes erect, hollow, tips bifurcate or slightly capitate. Archeopyle precingular.

Description: The central body is small, elongate ellipsoidal. With nearly parallel lateral sides. The wall comprises autophragm only; wall surface is smooth. The processes are erect, hollow, about one third of the body length; processes are uniform in width from base to distal end or slightly tapering toward distal end; process tips are slightly capitate of bifurcate. The archeopyle is precingular; the operculum is free.

Comparison: Protoellipsoidinium minutus sp.nov. differs from all previously described species of this genus in being small and having erect processes with bifurcate or capitate tips.

Dimensions: Holotype: length of the central body 23 µm, width 16 µm; length of processes 7 µm (one specimen measured)

Occurrence: Upper part of the Member 3 of the Shahejie Formation, Eocene, Well X, Liaohe, north east China.
