Phelodinium pentagonale
Phelodinium *pentagonale (Corradini, 1973, p.175, pl.28, fig.3) Stover and Evitt, 1978, p.118.
Holotype: Corradini, 1973, pl.28, fig.3; Eisenack and Kjellström, 1981a, page labelled "nach S.208"; Fensome et al., 1995, fig.1 — p.1649. Originally Deflandrea, subsequently Lejeunia (combination illegitimate), thirdly Senegalinium, fourthly Lejeunecysta, fifthly (and now) Phelodinium.
Locus typicus: Mt. Aldone, Piacenza, Italy
Stratum typicum: Senonian
Original diagnosis: Corradini, 1973, p. 175: Deflandrea pentagonalis
Test pentagonal in outline with triangular epitract and trapezoidal hypotract. One apical and two antapical horns, well developed. Smooth or slightly granular endophragm and periphragm, closely appressed, except at horns. Cingulum and sulcus well defined. Archeopyle intercalary.
Dimensions Holotype: diameter of the inner capsule 72x68 µm, width of the cyst 74 µm, overall length 120 µm. Range: diameter of the inner capsule 72-78x60-68 µm, width of the cyst 74-80 µm, overall length 110-120 µm.
Original description: Corradini, 1973, p. 175: Deflandrea pentagonalis
The inner body is subpolygonal in shape, being in contact with the outer membrane except in apical and antapical regions. It is thicker than the thin periphragm which is normally irregularly folded.
Apical and antapical horns with fairly broad bases tapering gradually to a blunted or acuminate apex, approximately equal in length. Cingulum delineated by two low ridges, the lowest of which is bent clown ventrally delimiting the hypotractal longitudinal furrow.
